Are silica beads poisonous?

Hey guys, can you guess a solid ,odorless , transparent , desiccant or drying agent which is capable of preventing things like medicine and other intake items from getting soggy ?This tiny thing is so common towards us that I think you all have guessed by now what I am talking about .Yes ,it’s Silica Gel. Silica gel is introduced to us by Chemistry Professor Walter A. Patrick. He has used it in a gas mask to absorb vapors and gases though it has been around since 1640 . It is a component of silicon dioxide which is naturally found in sand and also can absorb 30-40% of its weight in water. But do you know an interesting thing that silica gel beads are much similar to salt and sugar? Confusingly, sometimes both children and adults consume it without knowing whether it is toxic or not . Are you worrying about those who consume it ? let me help you . Though manufacturers often label them with “Do not eat” or “Throw away after using” sign, still consuming it won’t do harm . it will just exit ...

Allotropes Of Carbon

Carbon, one of the most well known elements in chemistry as well as our lives.People who don’t belong to chemistry or chemical science, also have heard the name ‘Carbon’ as we can find this element from photosynthesis to greenhouse gas.Seems cool, yeah? However, carbon can be called multitasker  as it shows multiforms. Then let’s get to the obvious meaning about its multiforms i.e 'Allotropes'.Well, allotrope refers to one or more physical forms of a chemical element which is different in terms of arrangement of atoms. Different forms of the same element are called allotrope along with differences in chemical and physical properties. Carbon has many allotropes because of its valency. Mainly there are 3 allotropes in pure carbon. They are: Diamond, graphite, fullerene(which includes nanotubes and "buckyballs").Also in amorphous form carbon's allotropes are:coal, coke, wood charcoal, animal charcoal, lamp black, gas carbon, petroleum coke, sugar charcoal. Sushi:Is designation define the origin?

Wherever you go for the famous and delicious Japanese food, you must find a dish called ‘Sushi’ as a frontliner in the menu. This mouthwatering Sushi, known to all as a Japanese dish, but does it really have a Japanese origin? What do you think? Well, the answer is NO, then how and when it made its way to Japan becoming this much popular?Let's find out the answer. Sushi was basically born in China by coastal residents as a long time fish preserving form. But the surprising thing is how they preserved the fishes back then as no modern preserving process and refrigerator were available out there. In Spite of these problems, they found out an effective way for preserving fish and that is the fermentation process. Though the term ‘ fermentation’ is well known to us,the preserving process is a bit interesting here.In this case Fermentation represents the dropping of pH ('potential of hydrogen' or 'power of hydrogen') of fish muscles. By dropping pH level (below 4.5) of the ...

Christmas 🎅 Chemistry đŸ§Ē

Christmas   đŸŽ… Chemistry Today is December 25,Merry Christmas. Christians celebrate this day in a very pompous way. They make the day memorable with various arrangements and activities ranging from decorating the house to giving gifts, eating and playing sports. And with all this but there is our favorite chemistry involved. Its presence has made everything diverse.Let's find out how chemistry⚗️ is involved in Christmas🧙‍♂️ arrangements. 1.Christmas tree :🎄 Several molecules contribute to the aroma of Christmas trees. The key compound is pinene (C10H16), which exists as two isomers like alpha-pinene & beta-pinene.Bornyl acetate also contributes a fresh pine aroma. And it’s usually used in perfumes & air fresheners.  2.Christmas light :💡 Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are made from semiconducting materials ; the colour of light emitted depends on the materials used. Many of these materials are based on gallium(Ga), such as gallium arsenide phosphide(GaAsP),gall...

Making of paper & our paper industry

Paper is a most important substance in our daily life. From birth certificate to death certificate, all of our important documents are printed on a paper. Paper is a part and parcel of life specially to a student.  We have a luxury paper industry in Bangladesh. Beside three state-owned paper mills, more than 100 private paper mills produce 1.5 million (15 lakh) metric tons paper and paper product every year on average.   Khulna Newsprint Mill (KNM), khalishpur. Pakshi North Bengal Paper Mills,  Ishwardi, Pabna and  Karnaphuli Paper Mills (KPM), Chittagong are the three state-owned paper mills. Among them Karnaphuli Paper Mills (KPM) is the largest paper mill in Bangladesh with production capacity of 30000 metric tons paper and 24000 metric tons pulp.KPM is established in 1953 and that is operates as a subsidiary of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation.  Some of popular private paper mills in our country are  ★Bashundara Paper Mills LTD. ★Meghna P...
