Making of paper & our paper industry

Paper is a most important substance in our daily life. From birth certificate to death certificate, all of our important documents are printed on a paper. Paper is a part and parcel of life specially to a student. 


We have a luxury paper industry in Bangladesh. Beside three state-owned paper mills, more than 100 private paper mills produce 1.5 million (15 lakh) metric tons paper and paper product every year on average.  

Khulna Newsprint Mill (KNM), khalishpur.

Pakshi North Bengal Paper Mills,  Ishwardi, Pabna and 

Karnaphuli Paper Mills (KPM), Chittagong are the three state-owned paper mills. Among them Karnaphuli Paper Mills (KPM) is the largest paper mill in Bangladesh with production capacity of 30000 metric tons paper and 24000 metric tons pulp.KPM is established in 1953 and that is operates as a subsidiary of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation.

Paper is mainly Cellulose. That is a complex polymer of Glucose (C6H12O6) appear with B-D Glycosydic bond. 

In our country, most of paper mills use bamboo and soft wood as a raw materials to produce paper pulp. 

After cutting bamboos and woods into small pieces mixed them whit white cooking liquor and cook them at 110 psi pressure with steam. White liquor is a solution of 27.17% Sodium Sulfide (Na2S), 58.6% caustic soda (NaOH) and 14.3% Soda Ash  ( Sodium Carbonate Na2CO3)

Bamboo/wood + (Na2S+NaOH+Na2CO3) -------> R - COOH + R' - OH + R"SH 


After cooking,  separated pulp from the mixture and bleach with chlorine (Cl). Then wash them, beating with beater, refining and at last make them paper sheet. China clay, Titanium dioxide (TiO2), Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and talc are use as filler materials to make paper softy or improve some properties of the paper.
